The capital of this scenic Caribbean Island is Roseau, and it’s the perfect place to be based in order to explore this unique island to the full. Prepare to slow down, take in the scenery, breathe fresh air, sample fruit right off the trees and experience nature in a way unique to few places on earth. There is much accommodation to be found around the island, most of it on the low lying coastal regions, particularly on the more sheltered eastern side. Roseau has a great selection of hotels catering to different budgets and it’s a good choice for a stay on the island. Hurricanes have been known to hit the island too, especially during the Caribbean Hurricane Season, which coincides with the end of the wet season.
Some smaller ships may dock at the Portsmouth Cruise Ship facility on the northwestern tip of the island, about 30 miles northwest of Roseau. The local currency is the Eastern Caribbean Dollar, which is relatively stable and pegged to the U.S. dollar. There are ATM's in Roseau and Portsmouth connected to Cirrus, Star and Plus networks, which dispense E.C. U.S. dollars are widely accepted by most tour operators, restaurants and vendors; however, change may be given in local currency.

During our visit, I walked from the cruise port to the other side of Roseau and back again. You will find plenty of juices like pineapple, melon and mango along with a wide range of beers, rum and local spirits. There is no government owned public transportation in Dominica. There are privately owned mini-buses that serve routes from Roseau to the villages on the island. The mini-buses will have a number plate that begins with an “H”. If you are along a bus route and see one of these mini-buses, you can flag them down by waving at them.
There are many smaller shops around Roseau that have a diverse selection of hand-made products. The closest spot for WiFi is Cocorico Cafe which is right across from the pier. Daytime temperatures range from 70 – 85 degrees (F), with cooler temperatures in the mountains. June through October is the rainy season and also when most hurricanes develop.
